Author (Biography): Juan Armando Rojas Joo

As a transboundary poet, novelist and essayist, Juan Armando Rojas Joo has published Vertebral River / Río vertebral (2009, 2002), Ceremonial of Wind / Ceremonial de viento (2006), Santuarios Desierto Mar (2004) and Lluvia de Lunas (1999). In 2004 he co-edited the anthology Canto a una Ciudad en el Desierto (Song to a City in the Desert) – a poetic complaint against femicide and violence in Ciudad Juarez. His work has been published in magazines and anthologies in Mexico, Nicaragua, Canada, United States, Portugal and Spain. During the spring of 2011 Rojas was honored by the University of Coimbra, Portugal, as a Poet-in-Residence. Rojas Joo received his bachelor’s and master’s of arts from the University of Texas at El Paso, a Ph.D. at the University of Arizona and in 2002 he was guest professor and post-doctoral with Andrew W. Mellon Fellow at Amherst College, Massachusetts. He currently teaches Language Arts at Ohio Wesleyan University. He has also been invited to give seminars on Literature and Creative writing at the Benito Juarez Autonomous University of Oaxaca and the Autonomous University of Chihuahua, Mexico. Rojas Joo focuses his professional and creative interests in Mexican Border Studies.

Jennifer Rathbun has a Ph.D. from the University of Arizona in Contemporary Latin American Literature and is currently an Associate Professor of Spanish and Chair of the Department of Foreign Languages at Ashland University in Ohio. The Bitter Oleander Press published her translation of the poetry collection Afterglow / After the beam by Mexican author Alberto Blanco in June 2011. In 2009, she published her translation of the poetry collection vertebral River / Vertebral River by Mexican author Juan Armando Rojas Joo in Pecan Grove Press. Also Rathbun Rojas Joo’s work translated Ceremonial Wind / Ceremonial of Wind (2006) and is co-editor of the anthology of poetry Canto a desert city (2004). In Addition, her poetry, translations and articles on Contemporary Latin American Literature Appear in multitude numerous international journals and reviews.
